FLUID Imaging Technologies has delivered a FlowCam particle imaging and analysis system to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in its laboratory. The agency issued ‘solicitation requirements’ for an imaging-based particle analysis instrument offering continuous, microscopic, non-destructive viewing of samples, and which measures near transparent particles with sizes down to two micrometres (2um, 2 microns).
FlowCam can automatically detect and image particles in 0.5ml samples with a claimed volume efficiency greater than 85%. It measures particle size and morphology, and has pattern matching functions as well as particle count and percent by type. Operators can immediately view results and interact with images and data in real-time in an Excel format.
The FlowCam replaces labour-intensive manual microscopy with an automated instrument that rapidly detects and images individual particles in a fluid sample. The images are saved with their corresponding size, shape, count and other measurements for further review and analysis using the companion VisualSpreadsheet analysis software.
