A NEW hybrid ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) launched by Agilent Technologies is the first to incorporate supercritical fluid chromatography capabilities.
The 1260 Infinity Hybrid SFC/UHPLC system allows the researcher to select the most suitable separation method for the sample under analysis, which is particularly useful when studying impurities and complex materials, says the company.
“Chromatographers can switch between SFC and UHPLC on the same instrument without changing methods or hardware”, said Stefan Schuette, senior marketing director for liquid chromatography at Agilent. “Users can have great confidence in the results from using these two orthogonal techniques”.
The 1260 Infinity is said to be the only SFC system with the capability of reaching 600 bar, and because it combines two techniques in a single instrument it is being promoted as a more economical alternative which also saves lab bench space.
Further economies can be found in the device’s use of standard CO2 rather than the more expensive SFC-grade gas, and the lower solvent demand and lower waste generation of SFC compared to liquid chromatography, both of which which may increase the appeal of the instrument to budget-conscious laboratories.
The 1260 Infinity Hybrid SFC/UHPLC is compatible with Agilent’s 6100 series single quad LC/MS instruments.
