A NEW programme of free educational webinars on lyophilisation and freeze drying has been announced for August, September, and October 2012.
On 23 August 2012, Yves Mayeresse, director of manufacturing at GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, discusses ‘Challenges and Opportunities When Scaling Up Your Lyophilised Pharmaceutical Products’. The presentation provides an overview of factors influencing the success of scale-up. The equipment difference, the robustness of the formulation and the required adaptation of the freeze-dried sample will be reviewed in the presentation.
On 25 September 2012, Dr Margit Gieseler of Gilyos will present a webinar entitled entitled ‘Measurement of the Specific Surface Area (SSA) of Lyophilised Products’. This presentation discusses how the inner cake morphology of freeze-dried products can act as an indicator for the applied process conditions such as freezing rate or shelf temperature and pressure settings during the drying phases. As pore size of the freeze dried cake is directly related to surface area, measurement of the latter provides a quantitative insight into the product`s performance under various conditions.
On 11 October 2012, lyophilisation expert and consultant Sid Wolfe discusses ‘Determining Conditions for Annealing to Improve the Rate of Primary Drying’. This includes a detailed method for making microscopic observations of Ostwald ripening with commercially available equipment to determine the conditions for annealing with the purpose of improving the rate of primary drying.
SP Scientific webinars last 45 minutes with a Q&A session immediately afterwards. The company sells its products under the FTS Systems, VirTis, Hull, Genevac, and National-Hotpack brands.
