Photon detectors have high radiation hardness

THE RECENT acquisition of International Radiation Detectors (IRD) by Opto Diode has brought new products to the company’s range, including the IRD SXUV 100 ultraviolet/extreme ultraviolet (UV/EUV) photodiodes. These advanced photon detectors have a 10x10mm square active area (100mm2), and feature high radiation hardness. This makes them suitable for long-term operation in high particle flux environments, without loss of responsivity.

The front window of the diode is nitrided metal silicide, which permits operation without loss of performance in high humidity and other environments that would otherwise demand sealed packages. Diodes with single active areas are available from 1 to 576mm2; quadrant diodes with several central openings may also be specified.

Opto Diode says the IRD SXUV 100 photodiode showed no observable responsivity loss after exposure to billions of 157 and 193nm pulses and exposure to 8W/cm2 of CW 248nm laser irradiance for three weeks.
